S13 and Ilius
Recent mixtapes compiled by Secret Thirteen’s Justinas (a.k.a S13) and Ilius for SeekSickSound and Orecast mix series (mixes below)
Two mixes by long-time Secret Thirteen members Ilius and Justinas Mikulskis (a.k.a S13) were compiled in the breezy haziness of spring for the Lithuanian Orecast and SeeSickSound (FR) respectively. These might give some insight into recent (or not) discoveries of the guys behind the journal.
Justinas’s mix for SeaSickSound focuses on 80’s-90’s synth artifacts and obscurities, particularly the more atmospheric, poetic, and moody edges of the genre. The mix guides the listener across unexplored landscapes and creates a bizarre sonic world of abstract artistic experiments, romantic poetry, early analog space ventures, and synth elegance. It’s a nocturnal meditation with city lights twinkling somewhere behind the window.
In contrast, Ilius’ selection is a daydream, inspired by lengthy walks and wanderings across unexplored urban or natural landscapes. It mimics the unlikely balance of tranquility and anxiety felt in new locations. The sound is akin to Sunday trips, railway track romanticism, seaside brunches on early evenings. The first hour of the podcast is hosted by Lithuanian experimental music DJ and promoter Muk, and is dedicated to silence as well as its primary importance for the evolution of sound.
